Croydon Smart City Bus Shelters
Creating The Smart Bus Shelter Of The Future
We're super excited to formally announce our latest project.
Working in partnership with VALO Smart City, Croydon Council and Grimshaw Architects we'll be deploying PassageWay real-time passenger information (RTPI) digital signs to power more than a hundred innovative smart bus shelters across the London borough of Croydon.
Bus shelters play a critical, yet often undervalued role in the passenger journey, obviously for bus usage but also for feeding into other public transport modes via onward and related travel. Indeed, at the most basic level, without a bus stop, customers can't begin their journey. Historically, service information has been considered secondary to a commercial model that prioritised advertising revenue generation. London has long been considered the benchmark for a successful, integrated public transport network, with a world-beating open data strategy. This new smart city technology will take it to the next level, with opportunities now open for local authorities beyond Croydon and for TfL to follow suit..
Our objectives for the project have been driven by how best to use real-time digital signage to:
1. Remove the anxiety many people feel about catching public transport
2. Reassure customers that their choice of using public transport is safe, efficient, and timely
3. Generate demand for public transport amongst customers who may not have previously considered it as a choice
4. Inform customers of any disruptions to their journey so they can make alternative plans
PassageWay real-time passenger information (RTPI) digital signs will be deployed in each bus shelter across two large inter-linked screens, displaying an optimised customer experience through an always-on approach, updating every few seconds in tandem with the real-time TfL data feed.
The bus shelter of the future will begin roll-out in 2022 and we'll provide a more detailed case study in due course.
