Smart Bus Shelters For London
RTPI Digital Signs For Circa 120 Smart Bus Shelters Across The London Borough Of Croydon
We were contracted in mid 2021 to support a new Smart City programme being planned for Croydon. Working alongside the lead contractor, leading architectural firm Grimshaw, Transport for London and the digital team at Croydon Council we evolved, developed and deployed next generation RTPI digital signs.
The PassageWay smart bus shelter digital signs help overcome much of the anxiety that many customers feel when considering public transport. Namely, confusion over what services will meet their needs, the length of time a journey may take and any disruptions that may affect their current and onward journey.
To overcome these challenges we included several innovative features:
Dynamic bus route maps - leveraging live data from the TfL API, the digital signs plot the onward route of each service onto a Legible London style map, with corresponding details of all the onward stops and the estimate journey time to each.
Disruption alerts - showing any notifications that may affect the customers journey.
Onward travel status - with status details on other TfL modes including bike, boat, tram, tube and train.
Smartphone friendly - to support an associated Smart Croydon App we provide an Arrivals screen for each smart bus shelter as a fully responsive web page that can be displayed on any connected device.
We also introduced several technical innovations including connecting each sign directly to the TfL API to reduce data latency.
