True real-time transport information is vital

Across Wales there are many rural stations where train arrival data on the CIS screens, is not ‘real-time'. The issue is that the information is generated based upon a train passing a fixed geographic trigger. In remote areas there are significant distances between these triggers resulting in the data displayed to customers being often static or incorrect.

The lack of real-time information on train services at many rural train stations across Wales is a major issue as it means many customers have a poor customer experience of the train service. This matters because it may lead customers to feel that they cannot rely on the public transport network and so turn instead to travelling by car or they may not travel at all meaning they miss out on work, cultural or other opportunities.

Our TRIG Solution

We elected to develop a low-cost solution to the lack of real-time information, leveraging customer devices (smartphones, laptops etc) and bypassing the existing data sources to instead use the data of the true geo-location of the train service (supplied by a third-party data supplier - SignalBox). Our solution provides a digital sign as a self-updating web page that can easily be viewed on any connected screen. Available in both English and Welsh we supplied digital signs for four trial stations across the TfW network. Customers access the personal digital signs by simply scanning a QR code on a poster in the station.
