Specialist Passenger Solutions: Hinkley Point C

Supporting Sustainable Coach Transport at Hinkley Point C

Hinkley Point Power Station

RTPI Digital Signs At One Of Europe’s Largest Construction Sites

Hinkley Point C in Somerset is one of the largest construction projects in Europe. The new nuclear power station, being built by EDF, will generate zero‑carbon electricity for around six million homes and help avoid approximately 9 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Construction runs 24/7 across a 430‑acre site and has over 14,000 people working there each day.

The Transport Challenge

Specialist Passenger Solutions (SPS) is responsible for transporting almost everyone who travels to and from the construction site, whether for work or site visits. Operating a dedicated fleet of coaches, SPS runs services across Somerset and the wider South West, including routes serving Minehead, Weston‑super‑Mare, Taunton and Bristol.

With services operating continuously to multiple destinations, SPS faced a growing challenge: how to provide thousands of on‑site workers with clear, real‑time information about departures, service allocations and disruptions across such a large and busy site.

The Solution

PassageWay worked with a team of suppliers led by Trueform Engineering to deliver an effective solution.

Because RTI was not available out-of-the-box we introduced TransportAPI to integrate appropriate service data from UTrack and make it available via its API for display on custom-designed PassageWay digital signs.

PassageWay also developed a simple disruption notification tool, allowing SPS staff to easily post and remove notices. Trueform supplied and installed 55inch digital totems to display the live service information, and also provided project oversight and testing services.

To maximise visibility across the vast site, SPS introduced QR codes on signage and posters. Scanning the code opens the same live service information directly in a smartphone browser, with no app download, registration or login required. This ensured consistent information was available wherever staff were located.

The Results

The live passenger information system has become a valued amenity for the workforce at Hinkley Point C. Passengers benefit from clearer wayfinding and reduced uncertainty during disruption. For SPS, the solution reduces pressure on staff, improves communication and supports the efficient, sustainable movement of thousands of people every day.

“We’re very pleased with the PassageWay digital signage at Hinkley Point. It provides a valuable, reliable service for the thousands of workers who travel with us every day. The system runs smoothly with minimal support required, and when issues do arise, the PassageWay team resolves them quickly and effectively.”
